Internet rumor on Bravecto, the oral flea and tick killer? | Dr. Justine Lee

Posted by justinelee in Animal Safety, Blog, Pet Health

FYI, just saw this PDF circulating from Merck Animal Health, makers of Bravecto. Hopefully this will help answer some of your comments and queries! What experience have you had with this oral flea and tick medication for dogs?

My 3 year old golden retriever was given Bravecto after we found 5 Black legged ticks on her two months ago. Since then she has not had a solid BM and has a lot of gas. The stool is very difficult to clean up. We have tested her for giardia and worms, which was negative. And she has also been on metronidazole. She also has been given plain pumpkin with her food and probiotics to help. Nothing seems to work. Wondering if I should give her the next dose of Bravecto? Also wondering if all of a sudden a dogs food could diagree with her? Any ideas would be helpful. Seems like I have been to the vets office way too often!!!

Oh no! My answer: Hills W/D prescription canned food for a few days. Call your veterinarian to pick this up (especially since she was on metronidazole) – your vet should just let you pick it up. It’s really palatable but makes your dog’s feces yellowish colored (due to high corn content), but works like a CHARM to clear up diarrhea within 1 day. Let me know if that helps!

This happened to my dog too. He had loose stools, we gave him metronidazole and it did not clear it up. We also had a stool sample done and it was not a stool sample. Things got progressively worse after that point. G.I. issues are significant concern with this medication. I highly recommend that you come to the Facebook group called Does Bravecto Kill Dogs? It is a place to read about other dogs ‘ Side effects. I highly recommend that you do not give him another dose of Bravecto. But please make up your own mind after reading about the side effects being posted in this group.

Sorry, that should have said we had a stool sample done and it was not parasites.

Internet rumor on Bravecto, the oral flea and tick killer?

No, not a rumor, but the truth. And the FB group “Does Bravecto Kill Dogs?” is now nearly 16500 members strong. The US based Change.org petition against this pesticide has just reached 6631 supporters. That is nearly 2000 more since my last comment on your other Bravecto post.

So you think it’s a rumor? Then think again.

PS: Why did you delete my comment regarding Dr Stephen Spurr’s comment on your other Bravecto post?

Why does the FDA has an article about it on their website if it’s just an internet rumor??

Great question. This original blog is several years ago. But great point about the FDA warning and I will update this soon!

I’d call your veterinarian – here’s some basic information about gastroenteritis and I hope it helps! Worth having your veterinarian report it also.

i gave my dog bravecto and 2 weeks later he was diagnosed with diabetes. My dog was always healthy and steadily declined after giving him bravesto. He was lethargic and not eating even treats and didnt want to walk or do anything. Turns out that diabetes does that. He was also drinking like crazy and peeing like mad.

Lots of good advice here, and you are right. Bravecto for dogs treats types of Flea and tick and even the infestations cause by them. last for 3 months which good in comparison to other treatments available in the market.

My dog was a very healthy female Border Collie and Black Lab Mix and in 2020 after her Bravecto Treatment she was diagnosed a few weeks later with Canine Diabetes, we administered the Insulin 2 times daily as prescribed by the veterinarian. fast forward 3 months, we give her the usual Bravecto dose and again she was drinking so much water and Urinating and vomiting about 1 week later, took her back for more vet time, everything seemed fine, again and she started acting like herself again after a few months. This process repeated after several months into 2021, we were unaware of the Bravecto causing it and sadly my dog recently passed from an allergic reaction to Bravecto, we last administered treatment on 08/04/21 and she had passed on 08/16/21.
Please watch your pets for any abnormalities in their behavior after taking Bravecto.

Bravecto can cause serious adverse reactions in many pets. Check out this FB page https://www.facebook.com/groups/138187053551225/?ref=pages_group_cta
