Ah, peanut butter— so yummy, but so unhealthy for you. Some peanut butter companies have tried to make peanut butter healthier by reducing the amount of fat within their peanut butter. Other brands are trying to cut out the sugar within their peanut butter to help reduce the glycemic index and calorie count. That means a few companies are replacing that sugar with a sugar-free substitute, xylitol. So should you be concerned if you give peanut butter to your dog? Yes! If you own a dog, you should be very careful buying sugar-free peanut...

Did your dog just get into a household cleaner? Which cleaning products are very dangerous to your dog or cat? Now, keep in mind that most household surface cleaning products only result in minor clinical signs of vomiting and diarrhea; these are products that you typically spray on windows and kitchen counters to wipe them down. However, there are certain cleaning products in your house can be really dangerous to dogs and cats. Products that pose the biggest corrosive or caustic danger threat are: • Drain cleaners • Pool chemicals •...

If your cat was just diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM), fear not, you’re in good company. Unfortunately, DM is a growing problem in cats, likely due to the growing rate of obesity. So what exactly is diabetes? Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine problem where your cat’s pancreas fails to produce enough of the hormone, insulin. With DM, the body doesn’t make enough insulin, which is the hormone that helps push sugar (“glucose”) into the body’s cells. Without the insulin, the body’s cells are starving for sugar; unfortunately,...

Did your dog just eat fertilizer? Did your dog just eat cocoa mulch? Getting ready to work in the garden this summer? Before you do so, make sure you know about potential garden dangers that can poison your dog. When in doubt, keep your pets inside while working with some of these common garden or yard dangers. Fertilizers During the spring and fall of the year, homeowners often use fertilizers to spruce up their lawn. Fertilizers come in several types: granules or water-based products (that are directly sprayed on to the lawn). Fertilizers...

You may have seen the bumper sticker “Help me be the type of person my dog thinks that I am…” After all, pets love us unconditionally and seem to ignore all our faults, stress-attacks, and bad moods. As a result, it’s our responsibility as pet owners to afford our dogs and cats (aka, family members) the emotional, financial and physical attention that they need – to make sure we’re providing an environment that is healthy, safe, and mentally stimulating to them. As a small token of appreciation to our loyal four-legged friends,...

Recently, I had the opportunity to check out a new designer leather, handmade dog collar by iQ Studio. These are heavy duty, 100% vegetable tanned leather and secured with brass hardware. What’s unique about these collars (besides not being made in mass production by China) is that all the collars are hand-tooled (which means that these iQ Studio dog collars are hand cut, dyed, punched, burnished and stitched together by hand). I tried out this type here: While I didn’t get to use the leash much (my dog is under strict voice...

The veterinary drug company, Zoetis, just released a new treatment option for dogs with atopy (e.g., canine hay fever – instead of sneezing and sniffling, dogs itch instead from allergies!). This new drug called Canine Atopic Dermatitis Immunotherapeutic (CADI, for short), is now available for both general veterinarians and board-certified veterinary dermatologists to use. This is an injection of the molecule IL-31, and is an antibody injection to help manage and treat dogs with allergic skin disease. IL-31 is one of the substances...

Summer Swimming: Pool Safety With Your Dog The dog days of summer are when many of us hit our backyard swimming pools, but just like our two-legged children, our four-legged friends should also be supervised when enjoying this great outdoor activity. Besides some of the obvious threats that face our pets, like being on the lookout for signs of dehydration and overexertion, we should also beware of other potential perils found underneath the summer sun. While the infographic below warns us of many temperature concerns, some of us don’t know...
