Recently, I had the opportunity to try the Tuggo Dog Toy on my own 57-pound, pit bull mix. After seeing this ranked as one of top toys at SuperZoo, I decided to try it out myself. First, I should clarify that my dog, Milo, is a ball-crazed mutt. He loves tennis balls, ChuckIt toys, soccer balls, etc. So when I took this one out, his eyes literally dilated! The pros of the Tuggo Dog Toy: The plastic is extremely durable and thick. It’s easy to unscrew the ball with a coin to add in water or sand. It entertains your dog for long periods...

Should I get my dog or cat spayed? Most veterinarians advocate spaying and neutering for several reasons: To help reduce pet overpopulation To help prevent certain types of cancer (like breast or prostate cancer) To help reduce certain unwanted behavioral issues (like aggression, dominance, sexual characteristics like humping, etc.) While these are all excellent reasons for spaying and neutering, as an emergency specialist, I have my own additional bias on why I want owners to do it. I’m a big advocate of spaying or neutering your pet...

H3N2 in Minnesota Earlier this week, I blogged about how H3N2 has hit Minnesota. Here, the press release from the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, released May 27, 2015.Recent test results confirm that at least five Minnesota dogs were infected with a new strain of influenza virus called H3N2. All of the dogs were most likely exposed to this new strain of influenza when they visited the Lucky Dog Boarding and Training Center in Detroit Lakes. All of the dogs fully recovered and no new cases have been seen at the facility since April 25. “I...

One of the toughest parts of working in the ER is the constant barrage of bad news that one has to deliver. Unfortunately, cancer is one of the top causes for presentation to the veterinary ER, and the leading cause of death in dogs in the United States. Having lost my own beloved pit bull, JP, to a brain tumor, my heart now breaks whenever I tell pet owners that their dog or cat has cancer. In the emergency room, the most common type of cancer that I see is hemangiosarcoma. This is a very aggressive type of cancer that loves bloody organs:...

Do dogs get strokes? Yes, dogs can get strokes, but thankfully it’s not common. Human strokes are often due to lack of blood flow or acute blood vessel abnormalities. Dogs don’t typically develop these. The two most common reasons for “strokes” in veterinary medicine include a fibrocartilagenous emboli (FCE) or old dog vestibular disease. Fibrocartilagenous emboli are when microscopic pieces of cartilage and fibrous tissue develop and break off, blocking blood flow to the spinal cord by occluding the spinal cord arteries or veins....

Ever have an allergic reaction? The same can happen to dogs too! Allergic reactions are a very common cause for midnight visits to the emergency room for dogs. Allergic reactions are often secondary to exposure to some type of antigen (an allergen). Unfortunately, we often never know the cause for the allergy reaction, but it can be due to numerous causes such as the following: Drugs (like vaccines, medications, antibiotics, etc.) Chemicals in the environment (from household cleaners like carpet cleaners, air fresheners, etc.) Bug bites (due...

The Canine Influenza Virus (CIV) Outbreak: Is it spreading beyond the Midwest? Great information from Merck Animal Health below: A little more than a month ago, veterinarians in the Chicago area noticed a sharp increase in the number of dogs coming into their clinics with respiratory illness. The disease was first thought to be Canine Influenza Virus, H3N8, which is a respiratory pathogen of dogs that was first isolated in Florida in 2004. Subsequent testing, however, carried out with the assistance of the New York State Animal...
